A good soldier, like a good horse, cannot be of a bad color.

The patriot volunteer, fighting for country and his rights, makes the most reliable soldier on earth.

Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state.

But in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.

Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.

So, as you go into battle, remember your ancestors and remember your descendants.
